Gareth Lubbe

Gareth Lubbe (* 1976 in Johannesburg ) is a South African musician ( viola , overtone singing ).

Live and act

Lubbe received his first musical training on the piano and the violin at the age of four. At the age of nine he made his debut as a violinist with orchestra in Johannesburg; He won numerous prizes in regional and national competitions. He also performed as a pianist with the SABC radio symphony orchestra ; he also conducted the Johannesburg Symphony Orchestra. Between 1995 and 2001 he studied violin at the Cologne University of Music ; he was also taught by the Alban Berg Quartet . After graduating, he went on to study viola at the Lübeck University of Music with Barbara Westphal .

In 2006 and 2007 Lubbe was solo violist in the Royal Flemish Philharmonic in Antwerp under Philippe Herreweghe , before he was solo violist in the Gewandhaus Orchestra in Leipzig . As a soloist and as a chamber musician he was active worldwide. Lubbe performed with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra on solo viola under conductors such as Claudio Abbado and Daniel Harding . In the field of chamber music he worked with Claudio Bohórquez , Daishin Kashimoto, Alexander Lonquich , Fazıl Say , Adrian Brendel and Baiba Skride . In the ensemble “Gelber Klang” he interpreted works of contemporary music. He also dealt intensively with new improvisational music . With the New Zealand saxophonist and composer Hayden Chisholm , he has also performed as an overtone singer in many parts of the world. Lubbe, who sings on other occasions, also wrote theater music for the German Schauspielhaus in Hamburg .

In 2013 Lubbe was appointed professor for viola at the Folkwang University of the Arts .
