The city wall around Ludwigsburg was not built as a fortification , but was intended to prevent desertions of soldiers . The gatehouses were built according to the plans of the architect Johann Adam Groß the Younger from 1758 to 1761 as a guard house for the military gate guard and the residence of the city gatekeeper, who monitored the traffic and levied state tariffs and, until 1912, city taxes.
