Gary Schaal

Gary Stuart Schaal (* 1971 in Berlin ) is a German political scientist and professor at the Helmut Schmidt University / University of the Federal Armed Forces in Hamburg .

Life

Schaal began studying political science, German literature and philosophy at the Free University of Berlin in 1990, graduating in 1994 with a degree in political science. He then worked for three years as a lecturer at the Otto Suhr Institute of Political Science of the University of Berlin, where he in 1997 with a thesis on the relationship between democracy , constitution and integration doctorate . Between 1997 and 2001 Schaal worked as a research assistant at the Collaborative Research Center 537 Institutionality and Historicity at the Technical University of Dresden . From 2001 to 2006 he worked initially as a research assistant and later as a senior research assistant at the Institute for Social Sciences at the University of Stuttgart . There he completed his habilitation in 2003 with a thesis on the influence of constitutional processes on the development of trusting relationships in democracies. In 2006, Schaal returned to the Technical University of Dresden as a Heisenberg fellow before taking on the position of professor for political theory and the history of ideas at the 2007/2008 winter semester .

Since January 2009 Schaal has held the "Professorship for Political Science, in particular Political Theory" ( W3 ) at the Institute for International Politics in the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences at the Helmut Schmidt University / University of the Federal Armed Forces Hamburg.

Research activity

As part of his research, Gary Schaal mainly concerned with contemporary political theory, constitutional theory , the emotion research as well as empirical research on democracy .

He is a member of the German Association for Political Science , the American Political Science Association and the European Consortium for Political Research .

Since April 2010, Gary Schaal has been editor of the Zeitschrift für Politische Theorie together with André Brodocz and Marcus Llanque .
