Gasherbrum III is a summit of the Gasherbrum Group in the Karakoram in northern Pakistan in Gilgit - Baltistan on the border with China .

location

It lies between Gasherbrum II and IV and is 7946  m high. Until 1975 it was considered the highest unclimbed mountain on earth. Because it is separated from the neighboring Gasherbrum II by a 7591 m high saddle, i.e. the summit has a notch  height of 355 m, it is not considered a separate mountain. For independence in the Himalayas, a notch height of at least 500 m is specified. Due to its dominance , the second criterion for independence, the Gasherbrum III is considered a relatively independent main summit .

Ascent history

The Gasherbrum III was not climbed until 1975 by a group of Polish alpinists. On August 11, Wanda Rutkiewicz , Alison Chadwick-Onyszkiewicz, Janusz Onyszkiewicz and Krzysztof Zdzitowiecki reached the summit. This was the highest first ascent by a woman, an achievement that, at least on earth, can no longer be surpassed.
