The Gaula ( Hindi गौला gaulā ) is a 578 km long left tributary of the Ramganga in the Indian states of Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh .
The Gaula has its headwaters in the Front Himalayas in Uttarakhand. It flows mainly in a southerly and later in a westerly direction through the mountains. North of Kathgodam, it turns south and breaks through the Siwaliks . The city of Haldwani-Kathgodam is located on the western bank of the river. The Gaula flows through the north Indian plain to Uttar Pradesh. It passes the cities of Kichha , Baheri and Shahi and finally flows into the Ramganga 17 km west of the city of Bareilly .
The river provides the water supply for the cities of Haldwani and Kathgodam (now Haldwani-Kathgodam ). At Kathgodam the Gaula barrage is on the river.
The construction of a river crossing in the area between Haldani and Kathgodam has been the subject of controversy for some time. The river is also polluted by illegal mining, which is why the authorities want to install electronic surveillance against theft of mineral resources.
The constant overexploitation of the forests along the river endangers the habitat and thus the survival of the tigers and elephants in the Terai region.
