Gaurika Singh (born November 26, 2002 in Nepal) is a Nepalese swimmer .

Life

Gaurika Singh's parents moved to London in 2005 , where her father works as a urologist at the Royal Free Hospital . Singh attends Haberdashers' Aske's School for Girls in Hertsmere . She trains swimming distances from 50 m to 400 m in all positions at the Barnet Copthall swimming club in London. When she wanted to start at the Nepalese national championships in Kathmandu in April 2015 , she witnessed the earthquake and donated money for the victims.

Singh started for Nepal in August 2015 with a wildcard at the World Swimming Championships in Kazan . In autumn 2015 she took part in the FINA Swimming World Cup and in spring 2016 in the South Asian Games, where she achieved medal ranks. Since she did not meet the A-Norm or the B-Norm for participation in the 2016 Summer Olympics with her performance , she was given a starting place in a discipline thanks to an exception for small sports associations. She competed with a personal best of 1: 07.31 min, the Nepalese record , in the 100 m back competition and won the 1st heat, but only reached 31st place among 34 participants in the entire heat. At the age of 13, Singh was the youngest participant of the more than 10,000 athletes in Rio de Janeiro .
