The spotted bulldog bat is a small species of bat with a body weight of around 15 g. The mean forearm length is about 49.4 mm, the entire body length about 114.7 mm. The coat color varies from red-brown to gray-brown, with the belly side being lighter than the back side. The flight membranes are colored light brown. The head, shoulders and the back are speckled white, similar to the Ansorge bulldog bat , from which it can be distinguished by the morphological differences in the crest and the lack of dark brown coloring of the throat. Other morphologically similar species are the Egyptian bulldog bat ( Tadarida aegyptiaca ) and the Angola bulldog bat ( Mops condylurus ), from which it differs in the lack of white speckles on the back and white fur on the belly. The upper lips are wrinkled, the ears have grown together. The tail protruding from the tail membrane is characteristic of the genus of the cantilever bats.

Systematics & distribution

The spotted bulldog bat occurs in East Africa from Ethiopia and Eritrea via Uganda , Kenya and Tanzania to Zimbabwe , Zambia and northern Mozambique . No subspecies are distinguished.

Way of life

The spotted bulldog bat roosts in rock caves and crevices. Sometimes the quarters are moved together with the Ansorge bulldog bat. Spotted bulldog bats are found in tree savannahs.

Etymology & Research History

The holotype was collected by Theodor von Heuglin near Keren , Eritrea and first described by him in 1861 under the name Nyctinomus bivittatus .

Danger

On the part of the IUCN , the species is classified as not endangered (“least concern”) due to its large distribution area and the frequency of the species.
