Geissorhiza bracteata is a plant from the family of the Iridaceae (Iridaceae).

description

They are 4 to 6 (rarely 8) centimeters high, perennial, herbaceous plants . The tuber is egg-shaped, asymmetrically flattened, has a diameter of 4 to 6 millimeters, is completely concentric in several layers and is light to dark brown, the shells disintegrate into irregular pieces.

The lower leaf is membranous and pale. The four or more (rarely three) leaves are 2 to 9 millimeters wide, sword-shaped and half to a third as long as the stems . The lowest leaves are basal, the upper ones are smaller and attach to the stem, the uppermost often resemble bracts .

The stalks, which are always upright, stand individually or two to five pieces that arise from the base, but occasionally also from a higher point on the stem.

Flowering time is from September to mid-October. The inflorescence is a one, rarely two to three-flowered spike , the bracts are green, 6 to 10 millimeters long and reddish on the edge, the inner ones are slightly shorter than the outer ones. The flowers are star-shaped and white, those of the outer petal rice are occasionally tinged with red on the back. The flower tube is 3 to 5 millimeters long, funnel-shaped and widening from the base, the bracts are 8 to 12 (rarely from 5) millimeters long, 4.5 to 6 millimeters wide and vice versa ovoid. The stamens are 5 to 7 millimeters long, the anthers 2 to 3.5 millimeters long, the pollen yellow. The ovary is 2 to 3 millimeters long, the stylus is divided at the level of the top of the dust bag, the individual branches are 3 to 4 millimeters long and bent back.

The capsule is narrow-egg-shaped and reaches a length of 7 to 9 millimeters, the seeds are angular, the number of chromosomes is 2n = 52.

distribution

Geissorhiza bracteata is found in South Africa in the southern and eastern Cape region from Albertinia to Makhanda and in the southern Karoo . It often populates clearings or forest edges.

Systematics

Geissorhiza bracteata belongs to the Weihea section in the Weihea subgenus .
