Geissorhiza foliosa is a plant from the family of the Iridaceae (Iridaceae).

description

They are 8 to 20 (rarely 30) centimeters high, perennial, herbaceous plants . The tuber is round, asymmetrically flattened, has a diameter of 5 to 10 millimeters and is completely concentric in several layers. It is dark brown, hard and woody and breaks up into irregular pieces.

The lower leaf is membranous, pale and may be missing. The five or more, upright to sickle-shaped leaves are 3 to 6 millimeters wide, sword-shaped to lanceolate and barely more than a third as long as the stems . The lowest three to four leaves are basal, the upper, occasionally up to four, are smaller and attach to the stem, the uppermost often resemble bracts .

The stem is erect, single or branched once or twice, in the latter case either from the base or the upper nodes of the stem. The inflorescence is a two- to five-flowered spike , the bracts are 9 to 12 (rarely up to 15) millimeters long, are membranous on the upper part and usually reddish on the edge, the inner ones are slightly shorter than the outer ones. The six-fold flowers are star-shaped, lavender to violet, rarely white. The flower tube is about 5 millimeters long, cylindrical and sunk into the bracts, the bracts are 13 to 17 millimeters long, 6 to 7 millimeters wide and vice versa ovoid. The stamens are 4 to 5 millimeters long, the anthers 4 to 6 millimeters long, the pollen yellow. The ovary is 2 to 3 millimeters long, the stylus is divided at the level of the top of the dust bag, the individual branches are 3 to 4 millimeters long and bent back.

The capsule is narrow-egg-shaped and reaches a length of 7 to 9 millimeters.

Flowering time is September to the beginning of November.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 26.
