The yellow symbiosis goby ( Cryptocentrus cinctus ) is a small representative of the gobies (Gobiidae). It is also called the lemon guardian goby .

distribution

The gobies live in the western Pacific from the Yaeyama Islands near Japan via Singapore to the southern Great Barrier Reef , as well as near Palau and Truk in Micronesia . They prefer to stay on sandy bottoms between coral reefs in lagoons at depths of one to ten meters.

features

The yellow symbiosis base is a maximum of seven centimeters long. It has the beefy head typical of gobies, a large slanted mouth and black or green eyes set high on the head. The pelvic fins have grown together. Most of the specimens are yellow with small bright blue spots on the head, fins and the flanks of the front body. There is also a simpler gray color form that has some dark horizontal stripes across the body. Older yellow specimens can turn gray.

Way of life

As a partner goby , the yellow symbiosis goby always lives as a pair with a pair of popcocks ( Alpheus bellulus , A. ochrostiatus or A. rapicida ) in a cave dug by the latter. The gobies usually lie on the ground or stand just above the common cave in the current and snap at zooplankton . When they leave the cave, the snapper always keep in contact with a goby with a feeler . Symbiosis basic pairs kept in aquariums spawn about every six weeks. After that, the male stayed in the cave for about a week to guard the spawn and to fan fresh water over it. The parents no longer take care of the hatched young.
