The Yellow pyramid butterflyfish ( Hemitaurichthys polylepis ) is a representative of butterfly fish (Chaetodontidae). It becomes 18 centimeters long and, with 60 to 65 scales in the longitudinal direction, has only a small number of scales compared to other butterfly fish.

He lives in the Pacific from southern Japan , Indonesia and the Philippines to Hawaii . Its habitat extends south to New Caledonia and Pitcairn . In Australia it occurs only on the Great Barrier Reef . He lives in the Indian Ocean near Christmas Island . In the rest of the Indian Ocean it is replaced by the black pyramid butterflyfish ( Hemitaurichthys zoster ). The distribution areas of both species do not overlap. Yellow pyramid butterflyfish prefer steep slopes on reefs far from the coast. There they live in shoals at depths of 5 to 25 meters and feed on zooplankton .
