The sparkling wine cellar has stood for German sparkling wine culture with French heritage since 1838 ; the products mature in traditional bottle fermentation in their own, over 600-year-old sparkling wine cellar under the Münsterberg in Breisach . In 2017, Geldermann implemented a comprehensive relaunch that is intended to pave the way for the brand for the future. The Classique Sec , Rosé Sec and Brut bottles have been given a new design.

history

founding

In 1830 the two Aacheners Wilhelm Deutz (1809–1884) and Peter-Joseph-Hubert Geldermann (1810–1869) traveled to France to buy wine on behalf of the manor owner Alwin Freiherr von Amelunxen. After working as a salesman for Joseph Jacob Bollinger's (1803-1884) champagne house in Aÿ ( Marne department ) for a few years , they founded the Geldermann & Deutz champagne house in the same location in 1838. Geldermann and Deutz developed into a leading champagne house and in 1882 was a founding member of the Syndicat des Grandes Marques .

Splitting up of the company

Due to the growing importance of the German market and customs policy, the company founded a winery in 1904 in Hagenau ( Alsace ), which at the time was part of the German Empire . There the wine delivered from France was processed into sparkling wine using the traditional method . Customs duties for bulk wine were only a quarter of those for champagne . After the First World War , Alsace became French and customs had to be paid again for export to Germany. That is why the Deutz & Geldermann winery was founded in Breisach on April 17, 1925. In 1995 Deutz & Geldermann split up into the Deutz in Aÿ Champagne (Champagne Deutz) and sparkling wine producers (Badische Geldermann private sparkling wine) in Breisach. The Deutz champagne house was taken over by Louis Roederer .

Takeover by Rotkäppchen-Mumm

On January 27, 2003, Geldermann was taken over by the Rotkäppchen-Mumm sparkling wine cellars . At that time the company still had 102 employees and annual sales of three million bottles. The goal at the time of expanding sales to up to 4.5 million bottles had to be corrected in the meantime: in 2007 only 1.9 million bottles were sold. The takeover could not stop the sparkling wine cellar's decline. In 1992 a turnover of the equivalent of 29.7 million euros was achieved, which corresponds to a production of around 6 million bottles p. a. corresponds. Today the production is stable at 2.7 million bottles.

Investments

In 2016, over 1.3 million euros were invested. 620,000 euros in the cellar and around 700,000 euros in a new sales and tasting room. The investments make it possible to expand production. The aim is to bring around 3.3 million bottles onto the market every year instead of 2.7.
