The Sedlo , formerly Vysoky Jelec (German Geltschberg or High Geltsch , 726 m) is the highest mountain in rechtselbischen Czech Central Mountains in the Czech Republic . Since 1969 the mountain has been under state protection as a national nature reserve on an area of 52 ha.

Origin of the name

The currently valid Czech name Sedlo (German: saddle) is derived from the saddle-shaped shape of the mountain.

Location and surroundings

The Sedlo is located about 5 km west of Úštěk ( Auscha ), at its foot there are the municipalities of Liběšice ( Liebeschitz ), Levín ( Lewin ) and the villages of Horní Týnec and Dolní Týnec ( Upper and Lower Tenzel ) belonging to the municipality of Třebušín ( Triebsch ) ).

history

From the finds of early earth walls and the remains of stone axes , it is concluded that a pre-Christian place of worship was located on the Geltsch. In 1912 a memorial was erected in honor of gymnastics father Jahn , but it no longer exists today.

From the southern tip of the mountain there is a comprehensive view from the Launer mountains in the west to the Bösigen in the east. If the visibility is good, the ridge of the Jizera and Giant Mountains can also be seen in the east .

Paths to the summit

  • The best starting point is the municipality of Levín or Horní Vysoké, from there a green hiking route leads directly to the summit.
  • Possible starting points are also Úštěk and Třebušín , from there direct paths lead up to the mountain. Another ascent to the summit leads through the small town of Trnobrany.
  • Liběšice on the Řetenice – Liberec railway line is recommended as a starting point for an ascent by public transport . From here the yellow marking leads directly to the summit (5 km).
