The Gemeinnützige Deutsche Wohnungsbaugesellschaft mbH (Deutschbau) was a state-owned housing construction company that existed from 1923 to 2007.

history

Deutschbau was founded in 1923 as a state housing association to build apartments for the Reichsmarine . At the end of the Second World War it came under the control of the Allied Sequester , but was reassigned to the federal government when the Federal Republic of Germany was founded . Branches were founded in Düsseldorf , Hanover , Hamburg , Frankfurt and Munich . The company built a large part of the apartments for state employees and barracks in what was then federal territory. The residential buildings were mainly to be found in residential areas around the Bundeswehr , post , rail and BGS service buildings.

In 1997 the federal government and the federally owned Deutsche Post AG sold the housing company to Veba Immobilien AG (from 1998: Viterra ) and Deutsche Immobilien Anlagegesellschaft mbH of Deutsche Bank AG for more than DM 2 billion. The new owners each took over 50% ( 58.3 percent from the federal government and 41.7% from Deutsche Post AG ) of the shares and committed themselves to full tenant protection of 38,000 apartments at the time. In addition, they committed themselves to let the company exist for 10 years and not to increase rent for five years. In 2004, Viterra increased its stake in Deutschbau from 50 to 99%.

Viterra was bought by Deutsche Annington in 2005 .

After the specified conditions had expired, most of the properties were transferred to Deutsche Annington (now Vonovia).
