Geogel ( Hungarian Kisgyógypatak ) is a village in Alba County in Romania . It is part of the municipality of Ponor .

The place is also known by the Romanian outdated names Valea Geogelului , Valea-Geoăgelului and Valea Geoagelului .

Geographical location

Church in Geogel

Geogel is located in western Transylvania at the transition between the Transylvanian Ore Mountains ( Munții Metaliferi ) and the Trascău Mountains . The village is located on a stream of the same name, which is a left tributary of the Geoagiu . The district capital Alba Iulia is located approx. 30 kilometers (as the crow flies) to the southeast.

history

According to various sources, the place was first mentioned in a document in 1770.

population

The population has decreased significantly since the first official survey in 1956 (then 475). In 1977, in addition to the 382 Romanians , two Hungarians and seven Roma were registered. The now only 149 inhabitants of the place (as of 2002) call themselves Romanians throughout.

economy

The residents live from cattle, less from agriculture. The place is - like most of the surrounding area - affected by the bad economic conditions and because of the remote location of strong migration.

traffic

Geogel is located on the unpaved county road ( Drum județean ) DJ 107I Aiud - Abrud . Public transport doesn't touch the place.

Attractions

  • In the village there is a wooden church Sfânții Arhangeli ("Holy Archangels") from 1751 and is a listed building. It was painted inside in 1856. The stone altar dates from 1840.
  • The scenic location is of tourist interest. The Cheile Geogelului valley gorge is located on the southern edge of the municipality .
  • There are still several thatched-roof houses in the village, but these are no longer used for residential purposes.
