Georg Alois Schmitt
Georg Ludwig Alois Franziscus Schmitt (born February 2, 1827 in Hanover , † October 15, 1902 in Dresden ) was a German pianist , composer and court conductor in Mecklenburg-Schwerin .
Life
Schmitt was the son of the composer and music teacher Aloys Schmitt . Schmitt first learned to play the piano from his father, then he was instructed in music theory by Georg Jacob Vollweiler . After extensive concert tours as a pianist, he became court conductor in Schwerin in 1857 . Schmitt wrote several operas, including the comic opera in two acts Trilbi (1845, libretto by Eugène Scribe based on a work by Charles Nodier ), works for orchestra, chamber music and songs. Most famous, however, is his work on the works of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart , for example he completed Mozart's unfinished Mass in C minor KV 427 and set the Fantasia in F minor KV 608 (originally written for mechanical organ) for organ and strings. Furthermore, he created an extensive work of vocal compositions, works for orchestra and chamber music.
After retiring in 1892, he spent the last years of his life in Dresden, where he was one of the founders of the local Mozart Association , of which he became first chairman in 1896.
Alois Schmitt was married to the singer Cornelia Schmitt-Csanyi (1851–1906), the couple lived at Schnorrstrasse 65 in the southern suburb of Dresden . Schmitt's grave is located in the Johannisfriedhof in Dresden- Tolkewitz .
