Georg Daniel Coschwitz (born February 18, 1679 in Konitz in the Pomeranian region ; † May 8, 1729 in Halle ), also Georg Daniel C. Coschwitz , in the literature incorrectly also Georg David Coschwitz , also called Georg Daniel Coschwitz junior , was a German doctor and pharmacist .

Life

The son of the pharmacist Georg Daniel Coschwitz, personal physician to Duke Ernst Bogislaw von Croy , graduated from the Latin school in Stolp and studied medicine in Halle since 1695 , where he joined the Stahl school and received his doctorate in 1699 with the dissertation Diss. Sistens aegrum haemoptysi periodica laborantem . In 1700 he settled down as a general practitioner and obstetrician and opened a pharmacy. In 1716 he was appointed associate professor of medicine at the University of Halle. In 1718 he was given the full professorship of anatomy , and he now gave lectures on botany , anatomy, surgery and medicine. He was considered hard-working, technically a little less talented than, for example, his younger contemporary Heinrich Bass , but as organizationally skillful. His achievements included the construction of an anatomical theater that had not yet existed in Halle at his own expense and the repair and maintenance of the botanical garden, which had been neglected before his time .

Coschwitz was a member of the Berlin Academy of Sciences and became known nationwide in the professional world through the publication of alleged anatomical 'discoveries' that were scientifically refuted. He published a total of 49 medical papers. In his treatise Consideratio pathologica , published in 1728, he defended the teaching of Georg Ernst Stahl . He was married to Katharina Constantia, b. Hoffstadt, and had five sons and six daughters.

Honors

On April 28, 1724 he was elected member ( matriculation number 366 ) of the Leopoldina with the nickname Mnesitheus .
