Georg Dittmann
Georg Dittmann (born September 29, 1871 in Barby ; † July 10, 1956 in Aschau im Chiemgau ) was a German classical philologist . He was a long-time employee and from 1912 to 1936 general editor and from 1936 to 1947 managing director of the Thesaurus Linguae Latinae .
Life
Dittmann studied classical philology at the Universities of Göttingen and Berlin from 1889 to 1894 . After his graduation in 1894, his academic teacher Friedrich Leo won him over to work for the still young company Thesaurus Linguae Latinae . After receiving his doctorate in Göttingen in 1900, Dittmann moved to Munich to merge the thesaurus office. In 1903 he returned to Göttingen as a research assistant; In 1904 he also took up a position as senior teacher. When he was appointed general editor of the thesaurus in 1912 , he finally moved to Munich. Since 1923 he was a corresponding member of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences . In 1924 the Bavarian Academy of Sciences appointed him a full member of its philosophical-historical class.
In the economically insecure years of his aegis, Dittmann tried to move the thesaurus company forward quickly. In the 1930s he hired numerous young philologists, including Wolf-Hartmut Friedrich , Heinz Haffter (who became general editor of the project in 1947) and Otto Skutsch . In 1936 he ceded the general editorial office to Bernhard Rehm , but was still managing director of the Thesaurus until 1947 .
