Georg Gentner

Georg Gentner (born December 6, 1877 in Wallerstein near Nördlingen , † March 19, 1940 in Ettenberg near Berchtesgaden ) was a German seed researcher.

Live and act

Georg Gentner studied pharmacy and botany at the University of Munich from 1901 and received his doctorate in 1905 under the botanist Karl Ritter von Goebel with the dissertation “ On the precursor tips of the monocots ”. In 1908 he got a job as an assistant at the Bavarian Agricultural Botanical Institute in Munich (renamed the Bavarian State Institute for Plant Production and Plant Protection in 1917) and was appointed head of the seed control department in 1911. Since 1923 he has given lectures on agricultural seed science at the Technical University of Munich . In 1929 he was awarded the title of professor. In 1938 he retired.

In almost three decades, Gentner has expanded the seed inspection department he heads into one of the most important seed inspection bodies in Germany. Sack sealing for clover and grass seeds, first introduced by his department in 1912, pioneered the seed trade . Gentner dealt particularly intensively with the determination of the state of health and the origin value of seeds. He published most of his articles in the institute's own magazine "Practical Leaves for Plant Cultivation and Plant Protection". He has summarized his many years of experience in the field of seed testing in the book " Das härtnerische Saatgut " published in 1938 .
