Georg Hermann Albrecht Graf von Lehndorff (born December 4, 1833 in Steinort , † April 30, 1914 in Berlin ) was a racehorse breeder , amateur racing rider and an important reorganizer of the Prussian stud farms.

biography

Georg Lehndorff was the youngest of three sons of the Landhofmeister Carl Graf Lehndorff and his wife Pauline, born Countess von Schlippenbach (1805–1871), daughter of Carl Friedrich Wilhelm Graf von Schlippenbach, landlord on Schönermark , and Friederike Caroline, born Countess von Beust , in 1833 born in Steinort.

Until he was admitted to the Kneiphöfisches Gymnasium in Königsberg i. Pr. 1849 he lived on his parents' farm. However, he had spent a large part of his childhood at a thoroughbred stud in Lugowen in the Insterburg district , where his passion for horses and especially thoroughbred breeding awoke. In 1850 he joined the cuirassier regiment No. 3 in Königsberg with the mobilization against Austria on November 15 . Here he also achieved his first victory as a gentleman rider . On February 14, 1855, Lehndorff married Clara Countess Kalnein and in May said goodbye to the army to take over the Laserkeim estate near Königsberg, which he had inherited from his father. Already during his military service he founded a small racing stable here, which he has now enlarged. In 1860 he sold the estate in order to set up a larger racing stable together with his brother Carl at Gut Haselhorst near Spandau. Graf von Lehndorff mostly rode his horses himself. In the period from 1853 to 1864, he managed to become the most successful amateur racing rider six times. He was the first foreigner to run his horses in Saint Petersburg . In the years from 1860 to 1864 he was able to win important races in both Saint Petersburg and Moscow . He was also able to celebrate successes in Warsaw and Vilnius . In addition to the stable he ran himself, he also owned a successful racing stable in France, which was managed by H. Jennings.

In 1866 Lehndorff sold Gut Haselhorst and took part in the campaign against Austria with the 2nd Guard Uhlan Regiment . On October 1 of the same year he took over the provisional management of the Graditz main stud , which he was to keep until April 1, 1906. On November 16, 1867, he was awarded the title of Landstallmeister, and on July 7, 1868, as Rittmeister , he said goodbye to active military service.

In the period from October 1, 1887, when the title was given to him, until 31 December 1911, he stood as a Prussian Higher Regional equerry at the head of the Prussian Stud Administration and was also the head of the main stud Graditz. He put his stamp on the Prussian state horse breeding in all provinces (especially the East Prussian). The upswing of Graditz horse breeding in the last third of the 19th century was also due to him. He made sure that the breeding animals previously distributed over various studs were centralized in Graditz and that blood was refreshed through purchases of English thoroughbreds . Lehndorff, honorary member of the British Jockey Club , wrote the handbook for horse breeders (Berlin 1881). In 1906 he handed over the management of the Graditz main stud to his son Siegfried Graf von Lehndorff .

In addition to his work as head stableman, Lehndorff was a member of the Prussian House of Representatives from 1873 to 1876 for the Torgau and Liebenwerda districts . In 1897 he was appointed a real privy councilor.

Count Lehndorff died on April 30, 1914 in Berlin and was buried at his birthplace in Steinort.
