Georg Johann Mattarnovi born Jürgen Mattarn , ( Russian Георг Иоганн Маттарнови * 1677 in Heiligenbeil ; † 2 November . Jul / 13. November  1719 greg. In St. Petersburg ) was a Prussian - Russian architect of the Baroque .

Life

Mattarn was a student and assistant to Andreas Schlueter . From 1696 to 1711 he served as a sculptor for Margrave Philipp Wilhelm von Brandenburg-Schwedt . In 1698 he changed his name to Georg Johann Mattarnovi in ​​the Italian style.

In 1713 Mattarnovi went to St. Petersburg with Schlüter and, after his death in 1714, took over Schlüter's projects. In 1715 he worked out the street plan for the Admiralty Island (with the streets facing the Admiralty Tower ), which was then implemented by his successor Nicolaus Friedrich Härbel . Mattarnovi was involved in the construction of the grotto , the coffee house, the poultry yard and the summer palace of Peter I. in the summer garden as well as in the construction of the Menshikov palace . In 1716 he began the project to build the (second) Winter Palace for Peter I. In 1717 he designed the second St. Isaac's Cathedral and in 1718 the art chamber . Other projects Mattarnovis were the first Neva - shipyard on the Fontanka over the summer garden (not received), the Pantaleon Church for the shipyard workers (1735-1739 of Ivan Kuzmich Korobov replaced by a stone church) and the Cruys -House at the site of the future little ones Hermitage . Mattarnovi was also involved in the construction of type houses on Petrograd Island for the City Affairs Office .

Mattarnovi was buried in the cemetery for those of different faiths at Samson Cathedral in St. Petersburg. The grave has not been preserved.
