Georg Kaulbach was born in Szillen, a place between Tilsit and Insterburg , today Schilino in the Russian Oblast Kaliningrad , in 1866 . He began his artistic training between 1884 and 1888 by studying with Carl Steffeck , Max Schmidt and Emil Neide at the Königsberg Art Academy . Another period of study followed in 1889/90 with Gustav Schönleber at the Karlsruhe Art Academy . In the early 1890s he made several study trips to Russia, in 1896 he returned to Königsberg again to develop his skills in portrait painting. From 1897 he lived with his family in Cologne, whereby external reasons forced him to work as a technician in a photo studio. After a long illness he moved to Gehlsdorf , a municipality on the outskirts of Rostock (incorporated in 1934) on medical advice . Here he began again with his artistic work. In 1922 he and Paul Wallat and Käthe Reine were among the co-founders of the Mecklenburgischer Künstlerbund. In the 1920s he spent some time in Munich, where he worked with the Grafrath painter and paint manufacturer Fritz Behrendt, a childhood friend, and with the Heinemann gallery . Georg Kaulbach died in 1945 in a Graal-Müritz old people's home, he was buried in Rostock in the New Cemetery. In 1947 a street in Rostock-Gehlsdorf was named after him, Kaulbachstraße.

After the memory of the Rhineland, numerous industrial images, its "industrial impressions" such as blast furnaces, factories and train stations, were designed in powerful colors. His mostly small-format landscapes, laid out in an impressionist style, showed dune, heather, forest and meadow motifs from the Rostock region.

There was also a connection to the famous Kaulbach family of painters : Georg Kaulbach's father was a distant cousin of Wilhelm von Kaulbach .
