Georg Rudolf Böhmer , also often Rudolph (born October 1, 1723 in Liegnitz , Silesia , Habsburg Monarchy , † April 4, 1803 in Wittenberg , Electorate of Saxony ) was a German doctor and botanist . Its official botanical author abbreviation is “ Boehm. ".

Life

Böhmer was born on October 1, 1723 in Liegnitz as the son of a pharmacist. He enrolled at the University of Leipzig in 1742 , where he devoted himself to plant anatomy as a botanist under Professor Ludwig . On September 10, 1746 he obtained the degree of a Medical Baccalaureus and on March 20, 1750 that of a medical licentiate. After the death of Abraham his father , Bohemian was on August 2, 1752 the University in Wittenberg as a professor.

He wrote about the flora of Leipzig , about the cell tissue of the plants, about the nature of the seeds via nectarines and wrote an overview of the plant world with the work "Bibliotheca scriptorum historia naturalis" in five parts, which appeared from 1785 to 1789. A genus of plants from the Urticaceae family , the Boehmeria , was first described by him and named after him. These are fiber plants that are now being processed industrially. Other small treatises such as academic programs, newspaper articles and dissertations on anatomy, physiology and pharmaceutical botany expand his work of 130 publications.

As a professor in Wittenberg he managed the chair for botany and anatomy and finally in 1782 for therapy. In 1753 he was assigned the duties of physicist of the city of Wittenberg, 1766 of the district office physicist and 1791 of the physicist of the city of Kemberg . For more than 40 years he devoted himself to training as a midwife and it was his work that ordered the autopsy of Jacob Kahle (Fresskahle), famous in Wittenberg.

Today there is a memorial plaque on the Leucorea building for the tirelessly working Bohemian, who refused appointments to Göttingen (1759) and Erlangen (1763), honoring the person who died on April 4, 1803 in Wittenberg.

Dedication names

In his honor the genera Boehmeria (ramie plants) of the nettle family (Urticaceae) and Boehmeriopsis of the mulberry family (Moraceae) were named.
