Georg Russinger

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Georg Russinger († January 10, 1439 in Muri ) was a Swiss Benedictine monk . From 1410 until his death he was abbot of the Muri monastery in the free offices (in today's canton of Aargau ).

Russinger came from a ministerial family from Rapperswil . His election as abbot took place on March 19, 1410. In 1414 he was probably a participant in the Council of Constance . A year later, the Swiss conquered Aargau and replaced the Habsburgs as patrons of the monastery. Contact with the founding family was broken off. It was not until 1431 that Russinger succeeded in obtaining an umbrella letter from the confederates in which they confirmed the previous rights of the monastery. In 1432 Pope Eugene IV gave the abbot the right to administer the sacraments to lay people living within the monastery walls.
