Konrad Brunner (* in Muri ; † March 9, 1410 ibid) was a Swiss Benedictine monk . From 1380 until his death he was abbot of the Muri monastery in today's canton of Aargau .

biography

Brunner was the son of a wealthy farmer from the hamlet of Hasli near Muri. In order to financially support the monastery, which was badly damaged by a major fire in 1363, he bought a vineyard in Thalwil from his own fortune . He was elected abbot on April 26, 1380; he was the first head of the abbey of large farming origin. In 1386 the Confederates set fire to the monastery during the Sempach War . In order to repair the damage suffered, Duke Leopold IV of Habsburg donated the parish of Villmergen in 1399 and the parishes of Sursee and Oberlunkhofen in 1403 .

The Benedictine rules of the order were hardly obeyed any more and a benefice economy had developed in the meantime , with which the monks each financed their own household and servants. In 1402 the abbot had to appeal to a court so that the income from the parish Sursee could be used at least temporarily for the reconstruction of the monastery buildings. He also limited the number of benefices in order not to overload the monastery economy.
