Georg Völker (singer)

Georg Friedrich Völker (born December 30, 1923 in Frankfurt am Main , †  March 14, 2006 in Munich ) was a German opera singer (baritone).

Life

Originally, Georg Völker, son of the hero tenor Franz Völker , wanted to study medicine. But after the war and with the artistic talent he went with well-known artists, u. a. Liesl Karlstadt , on tour in the Bavarian region. Then he began studying at the opera school in Munich. He received his first engagement in Gelsenkirchen. There he met his first wife, Eleonore Rieger (1921–1981), who was also engaged as a soprano briefly (1950/1951) in Mannheim before her husband. Völkers other engagements were in Augsburg, Karlsruhe, Berlin and Mannheim.

Georg Völker was engaged as a lyrical and character baritone from 1961 to 1988 as a permanent member of the Mannheim National Theater. His repertoire comprised a total of 116 roles, with his most sung roles and greatest successes being Papageno in Mozart's Magic Flute , Figaro in Rossini's Barber of Seville , Count Almaviva in Mozart's Marriage of Figaro , Don Giovanni, Danilo in Franz Lehár's Merry Widow and Town Clerk Sixtus Beckmesser in Wagner's Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg . His interpretations of characters from the contemporary repertoire, such as those of Ill in Gottfried von Einem's opera The Visit of the Old Lady (Mannheim premiere April 21, 1972) or Pater Grandier in the Mannheim premiere of Krzysztof Penderecki's monumental work Die Teufel von Loudun (16 April 1972) . June 1977) were positively received. His artistic career was further recognized by his appointment as a chamber singer in 1986 and two years later as an honorary member of the Mannheim National Theater.
