Georg Wahl (born February 21, 1920 in Cosel ( Upper Silesia ); † November 4, 2013 in Kirchberg SG ) was the chief rider of the Spanish Riding School in Vienna and a dressage rider and trainer for several years .

Life

At the Cosel stud, where Wahl was born and where his father worked as a driving instructor, he learned to ride, mostly bareback. In 1939 he was drafted into the cavalry of the Wehrmacht, where he had the horse specialist Hans Joachim Köhler from Verden, who later became known worldwide, as his superior . For a change, Köhler organized a dressage tournament for his soldiers 20 km behind the front, in which choice was the best. Alois Podhajsky was also present at this tournament, who brought election to the Spanish Riding School in Vienna a year later. Due to his extraordinary talent and feeling for horses, Wahl was allowed to take part in the performances at a young age. After a short stay at the front in Hungary, he returned to the riding school.

Wahl met Fredy Knie on one of the tours of the Spanish Riding School in Switzerland . Wahl went to the Knie Circus in 1951 and worked there for two years. With Fredy Knie Wahl rode a well-known pas de deux.

In 1955 Wahl took over the city riding school in Bern. There he met Christine Stückelberger .

In 1967 Hans Handler brought him back to the riding school as chief rider.

Wahl went back to Switzerland in 1971 with his extremely successful student Christine Stückelberger and later lived with her in Kirchberg near St. Gallen until his death .

Wahl devoted himself entirely to promoting his student Stückelberger and her top horse at the time, Granat, a couple who made dressage history. After team silver at the dressage world championships in Copenhagen in 1974, he won gold in the individual championships in 1975 and finally gold in the individual championships in 1976, gold again in 1977 and gold in the 1978 world championships in Goodwood .

Other successful students are Hermann Dür, Regula Straumann, Kurt Capellmann (father of Nadine Capellmann and Gina Capellmann-Lütkemeier ), Elisabeth Max-Theurer and Ulrich Lehmann.

Georg Wahl was married twice. He had four children with his first wife Maria Wahl, and two more daughters followed from their second marriage. Wahl and Christine Stückelberger were a couple for the last 45 years of his life.
