Georg Wannagat

Georg Paul Wannagat (born June 26, 1916 in Brzeziny ; † September 7, 2006 in Kassel ) was a German lawyer . He gained fame through his numerous publications on social law and in his role as President of the Federal Social Court .

Career

Georg Paul Wannagat was born as the son of the Protestant pastor Albert Ludwig Wannagat and his wife Lucie Adeline, b. Jahn was born in Brzeziny east of Lodz in Wartheland (Poland). He studied law in Warsaw and at the University of Erlangen. In 1938 he passed the first state examination and in 1943 the second. He received his doctorate as Dr. jur.

After 1945, Wannagat initially worked in the Bayreuth city administration and as a lawyer specializing in social pension law. From 1952 to 1954 he worked as chamber chairman at the Württemberg Oberversicherungsamt in Stuttgart. In 1954, when it was established, Wannagat switched to social justice, initially as a state social judge at the state social court of Baden-Württemberg in Stuttgart. In 1962 he became President of the State Social Court of Hesse . From 1969 until his retirement in 1984, Wannagat was President of the Federal Social Court.

His scientific career led in 1965 and 1967 to honorary professorships at the Eberhard Karls University in Tübingen and the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main .

In 1969, Wannagat initiated the “Judges' Week of the Federal Social Court” in Kassel in the field of social law. In 1972 he suggested the establishment of today's Max Planck Institute for Social Law and Social Policy ; A project group started work on March 1, 1976, and in 1980 it was transferred to an institute.
