Rainer Schlegel

Rainer Schlegel (born February 4, 1958 in Balingen ) is a German lawyer and has been President of the Federal Social Court (BSG) since October 2016 .

Life

Rainer Schlegel completed a law degree at the Eberhard Karls University in Tübingen , which he completed in June 1983 with the first state examination. He passed the second state examination in law in July 1986 in Stuttgart . He then worked as part of a scientific activity in the law department of the University of Tübingen, where he also received his doctorate in 1989 .

In April 1987 he started working as a judge at the Stuttgart Social Court . From January 1991 to December of the following year he was seconded to the Federal Social Court as a research assistant. Further secondments in this capacity followed from January 1993 to July 1994 and from July 1994 to June 1996. The aim was the State Social Court of Baden-Württemberg and the Federal Constitutional Court . This was followed by his appointment as judge at the Baden-Württemberg State Social Court in 1994 and that of Judge at the Federal Social Court on January 1, 1997.

He initially developed his judicial work there in the 4th Senate, where he dealt with the subject of pension insurance . Further positions were from September 1999 onwards in the 12th Senate, which is responsible for the law on contributions , and from November 2004 in the position of deputy chairman of the 1st Senate. Also in November of that year he took over the function of presidential judge of the BSG. From July 2002 to June 2006 he was a member of the Presidential Council. In 2007 party arithmetic opposed his advancement at the Federal Social Court, it was the SPD's turn to propose the office of president, Schlegel is a member of the CDU . On August 1, 2008, he was appointed chairman of the 4th Senate, which deals with basic income support for job seekers . From 2010 he was head of department in the Federal Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs . Since July 2014 he has been Vice President of the Federal Social Court. He has been President of the Federal Social Court since October 2016.

Schlegel was also appointed honorary professor at the University of Kassel and the Justus Liebig University of Gießen in 2002 and 2005, respectively . He is also the co-editor of several commentaries on social law .

From 2009 to 2017 he was chairman of the German Social Rights Association, since 2016 he has been a member of the permanent deputation of the German Lawyers' Association .

Rainer Schlegel's academic interest is in the fundamentals of social law, in particular the economic and social basic and framework conditions of social insurance.

Rainer Schlegel is married and has two children.
