Georg Weiß (pedagogue)

Georg Weiß (born October 5, 1885 in Schwabach , † September 23, 1951 in Berlin ) was a German educator .

Life

Weiß was born in Schwabach in 1885 as the son of a brickworker. After graduating from high school in Nuremberg, he studied pedagogy (German, history, philology, archeology and economics) at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich and the Julius Maximilians University in Würzburg . During his studies in Munich he became a member of the Danubia fraternity (1905). In 1908 and 1910 he took the Bavarian examinations for the higher teaching post. In 1912 he was at Wilhelm Rein with the dissertation The beginnings of the Pedagogical University seminar Königsberg 1809-15 to Dr. phil. PhD. He volunteered in World War I , but was seriously wounded in 1915.

In 1916 the habilitation for pedagogy followed (script: Prolegomena for the foundation of a new educational ideal ) and the private lectureship at the Friedrich Schiller University Jena . From 1918 to 1920 he worked as a school technical assistant in the Department of Culture of the Grand Ducal Saxon State Ministry in Weimar. In 1920 he became an associate professor for systematic education at the educational seminar in Jena. At the same time he was a teacher at the Stoy School of Education. In 1923 he joined the Association for Scientific Education . From 1923 to 1927 he was co-editor of the quarterly journal for philosophical pedagogy . In 1928 he became a member of the board of the Jena Adult Education Center. In 1929 he was appointed senior teacher at the Pedagogical Institute and a year later head of it.

In 1940 he became an adjunct professor for educational science at the University of Jena; In 1945 he was dismissed because of his membership (from 1937) in the NSDAP . Before that he was an independent city ​​councilor of Jena and a member of the Stahlhelm .

From 1947 he was the main consultant at the Central Pedagogical Institute in Berlin.

Scientifically, he was in the tradition of Herbartianism . He advocated a national educational ideal and supported a democratic pedagogy with a large participation of individuals. Although he did not make any major publications during National Socialism, some of his writings are viewed as a breeding ground for the National Socialist system.

From 1919, Weiß was married to a daughter of the pedagogue Wilhelm Rein .
