Georg Wigand (born February 13, 1808 in Göttingen ; † February 9, 1858 ) was a publisher and bookseller in Leipzig .

Life

In January 1834 Georg Wigand founded the Georg Wigand publishing house after numerous undertakings in Kaschau and Pest (Hungary) as well as in Pressburg in Leipzig . Together with Albrecht Kirchhoff , bibliographer and bookseller, Georg Wigand opened an antiquarian bookshop in Leipzig in 1856. After Georg Wigand's death in 1863, his brother Otto Wigand became a partner.

In 1905 Georg Wigand was honored with the naming of Wigandstraße in Leipzig .

Georg Wigand was born with Karoline Wigand. Heckenast (born March 7, 1808 in Kaschau , † December 5, 1892 in Leipzig ) married, with whom he had two sons. The older son Albrecht Wigand (born October 12, 1837 in Leipzig) also became a bookseller and married Helene Härtel, a daughter of the music publisher Hermann Härtel , on May 23, 1864 in Eutritzsch near Leipzig . The marriage was later divorced and Helene Wigand married the archaeologist Richard Schöne in 1873 , with whom she then moved to Berlin. The younger son Martin Wigand took over the business on January 1, 1874 and continued it until his death on January 10, 1891.

Georg Wigand and his wife Karoline also had their daughter Ida (* 1833), later married Cichorius.

In addition to children's books, the Georg Wigand publishing house primarily published fairy tale books as well as encyclopedias. The German Youth Calendar, published by the publishing house in several years, in collaboration with Robert Reinick , to whom he was on friendly terms, deserves special mention .

After the death of sole owner Martin Wigand (January 1891), Eduard Ferdinand Lomnitz took over the publishing house as owner on February 1, 1891. After his death (August 21, 1913), the publishing booksellers Lange & Meuche took over the publishing house in a general partnership on November 28, 1913 and incorporated it into their publishing conglomerate. The publishing house was dissolved in July / August 1946 and the company is no longer in the commercial register.
