Georg Wilhelm Stein , in contrast to his eponymous nephew of the same profession, called the elder (born April 3, 1737 in Kassel , † September 24, 1803 in Marburg ) was a German doctor, obstetrician, surgeon, court medic, university teacher and active Freemason .

Professional life path

Georg Wilhelm Stein studied medicine in Göttingen from 1756. After graduating as Dr. med. at the University of Göttingen in 1760, Stein became a doctor in Kassel in 1761. In 1763 he was appointed as an associate professor at the Collegium Carolinum in Kassel and he was given the management of the Accouchier - und Findelhaus . At the same time he was court medicus from 1766. In 1782 he received the title of Hofrat . In 1789 he was transferred to the University of Marburg as the second full professor of surgery and maternity arts , but did not work there until 1791. In Kassel he remained a member of the Collegium Medicum , of which he was director from 1791.

Stein was the director of the maternity hospital in Marburg. His scientific importance as an obstetrician made him known far beyond Hessen. 1793 received the title Oberhofrat .

Freemasonry

On February 20, 1773, Stein was admitted to the Freemason lodge in Kassel, Zum crowned Lion ; In 1781 he joined the Friedrich von der Freund Lodge in Kassel, of which he was master of the chair for many years, including in 1793 when Freemasonry was banned by the Landgrave in Hesse. He found out about this ban in Marburg. Regardless, he remained true to the covenant until his death.
