A knee injury suffered in the game year 1921 forced him to pause; therefore he left the club for a short time. The club newspaper wrote about this in 1922: “Our ... middle runner Winter was active in his post for a long time; his ... injury, however, made the ... line-up ... not advisable, especially since Kalb was doing an excellent job as a middle runner. Winter has turned his back on our association in misunderstanding the ... measure. "
In December 1922 the club announced the return of Winter. In January 1923 he traveled with the club to Spain and was used there against FC Barcelona , but had a weak form. Then he was used in several point games because Hans Kalb had suffered two broken legs. In 1924 his form improved again, emphasizing “... his head game, but even more so his endurance.” In December 1924, the club newspaper wrote: “Winter has ... saved itself from rusting .... At the moment he's the girl for everything, once a striker, then again a runner and finally a defender. ” In 1925, his form continued to improve.
