Oskar Georg Zenker (born August 1, 1869 in Leipzig , † April 6, 1933 in Stargard Castle ) was a German painter and interior designer .

Life

Zenker came from a respected Leipzig merchant family. His grandfather was the Leipzig city ​​councilor Ludwig Zenker (1797–1842), his father the judicial councilor and deputy chairwoman of the Leipzig city council Julius Oskar Zenker (1837–1895), who had married Charlotte Anna Elisabeth Wendler (* 1841) in 1866. His nephew was the sea ​​lieutenant Wolfgang Zenker .

After completing his school education, Georg Zenker began studying at the Leipzig School of Applied Arts and then switched to the Technical University in Munich . He continued his artistic training at the Dresden Art Academy and at Friedrich Fehr's private painting school in Munich.

From 1896 to 1897 he went on a study trip to Rome , where he devoted himself in particular to studying the great masters of the early Renaissance .

Creating art

Georg Zenker mainly got to know the artistic design of interiors. In 1914 he was awarded the golden prize for his designs in this field at the Bugra .

During his stay in Rome, he furnished the hall of the German Artists' Association in the Palazzo Serlupi with the ceiling fresco Genius der Kunst . During this time he also painted his first large painting, Spring in the Campagna , which received great attention in art circles. As a result, he mainly devoted himself to portrait painting , but was also successful as a landscape painter and graphic artist .

Zenker was married to Doris Mehlgarten (born January 14, 1878 in Leipzig; † August 6, 1972 in Munich), a great-granddaughter of the publisher Benedictus Gotthelf Teubner , since 1900 . The marriage had daughters Vera (1901–1985) and Marion (1905–1990).

His second marriage was to Laura Kramer. From this marriage the son Heinz Zenker (born January 14, 1912 in Berlin; † night of May 6/7, 1970 in Delmenhorst) emerged. This was an actor and later u. a. Managing Director at the Delmenhorst and Oldenburg City Theaters.

Zenker died at the age of 63. His ashes were buried in the family grave in the south cemetery in Leipzig.
