Georg von Gynz-Rekowski (born October 8, 1919 in Wernigerode ; † January 31, 1997 ) was a German theologian and local researcher in Wernigerode .

Life

Georg von Gynz-Rekowski, who grew up in Wernigerode and served as an officer in the operations department of the Army General Staff until 1945 , studied theology in Halle from 1948 to 1952 and then worked as an Evangelical Lutheran parish priest in Derenburg until 1966 . For family reasons he had to resign from the church service. Von Gynz-Rekowski received his doctorate in theology in 1966 with a thesis on the origin and interpretation of the Marian carpet in the Dommuseum Halberstadt at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg . The work was published two years later in the “Low German Contributions to Art History”.

Von Gynz-Rekowski is the author of several books on religious studies and local history as well as numerous articles, for example in the exile newspaper Wernigeröder Zeitung published in the Federal Republic and edited by Gerhard Bombös and in the Liberal-Demokratie Zeitung. He also took part in radio and television programs and has been teaching at the adult education center since 1968.

Von Gynz-Rekowski is considered the nestor of Wernigerode homeland and history research. His research on the altars of the Wernigerode churches is of great art historical importance. These works, like about 50 other works that belong to the inventory of the Harz library in Wernigerode, have remained unpublished. Unpublished works include the document book of the city of Wernigerode II (1971; copy of the manuscript by Eduard Jacobs ), guests in Wernigerode (1975), Harz folk art in costume and work (1975) and materials on the history of the monasteries of Ilsenburg and Drübeck (no year ). As a “bourgeois reactionary”, von Gynz-Rekowski was ostracized until the revolution in November 1989 and was generally not invited to state events. During the fall of the Berlin Wall, “our Gynz”, as he was called, was also politically active, for example as a speaker at the Wernigerode Monday demonstration .

Wernigerode's mayor at the time, Ludwig Hoffmann, paid tribute to von Gynz-Rekowski on the occasion of his death with the following words: "With his life he gave the city a lot, beyond his death." Von Gynz-Rekowski acquired valuable historical knowledge and preserved it for posterity.

His resting place is in the Theobaldi cemetery in Wernigerode-Nöschenrode .
