George Augustin

George Augustin SAC (born September 30, 1955 in Palai , Kerala , India ) is a Roman Catholic theologian and priest . He is the founding director of the Cardinal Walter Kasper Institute and Professor of Dogmatics at the Philosophical-Theological University of Vallendar .

Life

After studying philosophy, biology and theology in Nagpur / India, Augustin joined the Pallottine order in 1978 . In 1981 he was ordained a priest in Nagpur. From 1981 to 1984 Augustine worked intensively in the missionary work among the indigenous people in northern India. From 1985 to 1992 he did a doctorate in Tübingen with Walter Kasper on the theology of Wolfhart Pannenberg .

From 1993 to 1994 Augustin worked as a pastor in the parish of St. Maria in Stuttgart and from 1994 took over the pastoral care of the diocese of Rottenburg-Stuttgart. Since 1996 he has been working at the Philosophical-Theological University Vallendar , where he was appointed honorary professor in 2000 . The habilitation followed in 2003. Since 2004 he has been a full professor of dogmatics and fundamental theology . With the Cardinal Walter Kasper Institute, founded in 2005 and of which he is the founding director, the focus of his work is on the safeguarding and scientific continuation of Cardinal Walter Kasper's theological work, especially in the areas of ecumenism, theology and spirituality. Augustine is the editor of numerous scientific publications and the author of a large number of theological books and articles.

Augustin has been the pastor of the diocese of Rottenburg-Stuttgart since 1994 and was appointed consultor of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity in 2008. On April 1, 2017, Pope Francis appointed him Consultor of the Congregation for the Clergy .

Research and scientific focus

George Augustin is editor of the series Walter Cardinal Kasper Collected Writings (WKGS). In addition, he deals with current issues in church and society. Augustin works on a socio-political networking of theological science and social actors such as family businesses, parties and foundations. As chairman of the Cardinal Walter Kasper Foundation, he campaigns for the social responsibility of the Catholic Church in ecumenical dialogue.
