George Barrett

George Edward Barrett (born October 19, 1927 in Nashville , Tennessee ; † August 26, 2014 ) was an American lawyer who campaigned for the enforcement of American civil rights , the end of segregation in education, especially at universities, and campaigned for the exercise of employee rights. The Citizen , as he was called, represented African Americans who were defending their civil rights, trade unionists , anti-war protesters in court - even when the negotiations (as in the case of Rita Sanders Geier et al. Vs. University of Tennessee et al . ) dragged on for many years and a positive decision could only be reached after decades.

George Edward Barrett was born to George E. Barrett and his wife Annie (née Conroy), a family of Irish descent. He and his three sisters were raised in the Catholic faith. He attended Holy Name School first , then Father Ryan High School . After graduating in 1945, he went to Spring Hill College in Mobile , Alabama, from which he graduated in 1952 with a Bachelor of History (BSS). 1953 followed diplomas in economics and political science at the Plater Catholic Workers College in Oxford (England). In 1957, he graduated with a Juris Doctor (JD) from Vanderbilt University Law School in Nashville.

After his admission as a lawyer ( admitted into the Tennessee Bar ), he initially worked for the law firm of Cecil D. Branstetter (1920-2014) (founded in 1952) (today: Branstetter, Stranch & Jennings, PLLC, Nashville), and then - together with Douglas S. Johnston, Jr. to found his own law firm (today: Barrett, Johnston, Martin & Garrison LLC, Nashville) - in Nashville. As a result, he specialized in civil rights cases, labor disputes, collective bargaining disputes, legal proceedings for insurance fraud / securities fraud and constitutional suits.
