George Dangerfield

George Bubb Dangerfield (born October 28, 1904 in Newbury , Berkshire , England , † December 26, 1986 in Santa Barbara , California ) was a British- born American historian and writer , who was mainly known through his book The Strange Death of Liberal England (1935) and received the Pulitzer Prize for History in 1953 for his book The Era of Good Feelings .

Life

After schooling completed Dangerfield studying at Hertford College of Oxford University and graduated in 1926 with a Bachelor of Arts (BA) from.

He later immigrated to the United States and worked as a journalist there before he was an editor in the features section of Vanity Fair magazine between 1933 and 1935 . At the same time he began his literary career as an author of history books and initially published Bengal Mutiny: Story of the Sepoy Rebellion (1933), a depiction of the Indian uprising of 1857 , before his best-known book The Strange Death of Liberal England (1935) composed.

After acquiring US citizenship in 1943 , he did his military service in the 102nd Infantry Division ( Ozark ) of the US Army in World War II and was finally promoted to sergeant .

For his book The Era of Good Feelings , published in 1952, he received both the Pulitzer Prize for History and the Bancroft Prize in 1953 . He later wrote several other history books and a biography of the politician Robert R. Livingston . In 1968 he took over a professorship in history at the University of California, Santa Barbara (USCB) and taught there until 1972. In 1970 he received a Guggenheim scholarship , which enabled him to do research in Great Britain.
