The Kreuzberglkirche is the Kalvarienbergkirche am Kreuzbergl in Klagenfurt . The church is a rectorate of the parish church of St. Egid , with which it forms an urban development axis.

history

In 1692 Christoph Anton von Leilersperg had a large group of calvaries set up on Kreuzbergl . In 1737 the abbot of Viktring gave the Society of God the foundation for building a church, which was consecrated in 1742.

Building description

The baroque building consists of a square nave, a retracted, one-bay choir with a three-eighth end, and two smaller extensions on the north and south sides. The east facade with a pair of compact towers crowned by baroque onion helmets has a simple pilaster structure .

In the small vestibule under the organ loft there is a flat barrel with stab caps . The central space-like long house is structured by marbled pilasters and richly profiled entablature . The domed barrel vault with stitch caps was painted by Josef Ferdinand Fromiller with a painted false dome with an architectural prospect and the handkerchief of Christ . A barrel vault with stitch caps rises in the choir. The high-quality stucco decoration from around 1740 probably comes from Anton Gigl.

Facility

The high altar made of stucco marble with smooth and twisted columns shows the lamentation of Christ on the altar sheet . On the side are the statues of Saints Franz Xavier and Johannes Nepomuk . The painting on the left side altar depicts Peter after betrayal, the painting on the right side altar depicts Mary Magdalene . The three altars date from the time the church was built. In addition to the three altar leaves, Fromiller also created the paintings with the death of Joseph and the coronation of Mary. The church also has a painting of the Passions of Christ, pictures of St. Notburga from the middle of the 18th century and a mercy seat from 1741 as well as a baroque statue of Johannes Nepomuk on the south side of the choir.
