George F. Gomez
George F. Gomez ( George Furmose Gomez ; born September 19, 1938 ) is a Gambian sports official and manager in the entertainment industry. He is also a former national soccer player .
Life
education
Gomez attended St. Augustine High School in Bathurst (now Banjul ) and then Yundum College . From 1974 he attended the Chiswick Polytechnic in London , which later merged into the West London Institute of Higher Education . In Dublin , Gomez attended the Institute of Public Administration .
Activities as an athlete
In his teens, now at St. Augustine High School and later, Gomez was an active athlete. He played both for his school and in the Gambian national soccer team (1960-1964) and excelled in athletics, especially in long-distance running , where he set a national record in the mile.
Activities as a manager in the entertainment industry
In 1963 he was the organizer of the 1st Miss Contest in Gambia where Juana Jahumpa Njie (also Joana Jahumpa ) won the contest when Miss Bathurst won.
In 1968 he co-founded and President of The Gambia Friendship Society in London . He made it possible for the Super Eagles Band to visit England. In 1968 and 1970 the Gambian Super Eagles Band was one of the first African dance groups to visit England. He made sure that the first Super Eagles records were edited in England. The Super Eagles Band was a huge success in England and later toured Germany.
After returning from studies at King's College London , he was elected President of Banzik International in 1980, a youth organization in Senegal and Gambia with branches in Banjul, Dakar and Ziguinchor . After founding the Senegambia Confederation , Gomez initiated the organization of the Miss Senegambia beauty pageant in 1983, which Gambia won three out of four times when the competition was held in Dakar, Banjul and Ziguinchor.
In 1988, the Gomis Promotions was registered and the Miss Gambia beauty pageant again became the largest competition in the country, followed by Miss Tourism, a popular competition that helped promote tourism by involving tourism actors in the competition. Gomez serves as the senior advisor to the beauty pageant. He is consulted for all major beauty and talent competitions that take place in this country, such as Miss Black USA, Miss Bakau, Face of Gambia, Miss Scholarship Pageant, Miss Millennium, Miss Africa Beauty. These awards were launched in 1998 by OBIOSO Williams in collaboration with Gomez Promotion and took place in the Hotel Palma Rima under the motto "Gambia Music Awards". It was reactivated in 2008 by DJ Lamin Cham under the motto “Gamspirit Music Awards”.
Activity as hospital administrator
For fourteen years from 1977 to 1991 he was the first Gambian hospital administrator at the Royal Victoria Teaching Hospital (RVTH).
Activity as a sports official
From February 1991 to September 2010 Gomez was employed by the Gambia National Olympic Committee (GNOC) as executive director. He was the first Gambier to hold this post. In 1991 he initiated the now very popular May Day Mass Sports event and was Chef de Mission of the Gambian teams at the Commonwealth Games in Malaysia in 1998 , Manchester in 2002 and Melbourne in 2006 as well as for the Olympic Summer Games in Atlanta 1996 , Sydney 2000 , Athens in 2004 and Beijing in 2008 was Chef de Mission.
Gomez was also General Secretary of the Gambia Football Association (GFA) and later served as its President (interim) from 1990 to 1992 and as Vice President of the Gambia Boxing Association and the Association of Football Veterans. In November 2000, he was appointed Executive Secretary of the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA) Region Zone 11, which includes eight countries; H. Senegal, Mali, Guinea-Bissau, Guinea-Conakry, Mauritania, Cape Verde, Sierra Leone and Gambia. Since 2012 has been chairman of the Plymouth / Banjul Challenge . On behalf of the Ministry of Youth and Sport , he has been a sports ambassador for Gambia since 2015. He has received several awards for his many years of service to sport.
The Catholic Gomez as a writer
Gomez, devout Catholic, heavily involved in the Catholic Church of Gambia, he is a founding member of the Catholic Knights of St. Peter and Paul ( Knights of St. Peter and St. Paul ) that the St. Kizito's Parish in Bakoteh belong. He wrote a book, The Dramatized Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ , which was published in 2009.
He has been with the youth organization Camp Africa since 2009 , where he is director.
family
Gomez's father, Karofan Gomez, came to Bathurst (now Banjul ) from Bissau . Gomez has been married since August 1985.

- Awarded an honorary doctorate by Agape International Christian Theological Seminary / Agape University in Abuja , Nigeria
- 1998: 'Sports for All' award
- 2002: 'Most outstanding Personality of the year Award'
- 2009: Life Time Achievement Award (for life's work in recognition of his contribution to the development of music, fashion, beauty, and entertainment)
