George Augustus Frederick FitzClarence, 1st Earl of Munster (born January 29, 1794 in London , † March 20, 1842 ibid) was a British peer and major-general of the 36th (Herefordshire) Regiment of Foot.

Life

George was the illegitimate son of the Duke of Clarence and later King William IV (1765-1837) and his long-time mistress , the actress Dorothea Jordan (1761-1816). The children from the liaison were given the family name FitzClarence. George got a good education according to his class and studied at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in Sandhurst in Berkshire .

In 1831 his father bestowed on him the hereditary titles of Earl of Munster, Viscount FitzClarence and Baron Tewkesbury . The award was made with the special addition that the title can be passed on to his brothers Frederick, Adolphus and Augustus, as well as their male descendants, in the absence of his own descendants. A seat in the House of Lords was associated with the titles . In 1833 his father accepted him as a Knight Grand Cross in the Guelph Order .

On October 18, 1819 George FitzClarence married in London Maria Wyndham (1800-1842), illegitimate daughter of George Wyndham, 3rd Earl of Egremont , and his mistress and future wife Elizabeth Ilive. Seven children emerged from the joint relationship:

  • George (1836–1894) ⚭ 1864 Lady Maria Henrietta Scott
  • Edward (1837–1855), killed in the Crimean War
