William George FitzClarence, 2nd Earl of Munster , (born May 19, 1824 in Dun House, Montrose, Scotland, † April 30, 1901 ) was a British peer and grandson of King William IV , whose name he also bore.

From 1831 to 1842 he carried the courtesy title Viscount FitzClarence .

Life

FitzClarence's father, George FitzClarence, 1st Earl of Munster , was the illegitimate son of King William IV and his longtime mistress Dorothea Jordan . He himself, the 2nd  Earl of Munster , was therefore the great-grandson of King George III. and cousin of Queen Victoria . His mother was Mary Wyndham († December 3, 1842), illegitimate daughter of George Wyndham, 3rd Earl of Egremont .

After his father's suicide on March 20, 1842, FitzClarence became 2nd Earl of Munster. For the most part he led the life of the typical Victorian upper class with hunting parties and balls.

On July 1, 1842, he acquired a commission as an ensign and lieutenant in the Scots Fusilier Guards . On April 7, 1843 he acquired a Cornetcy and Subleuntnantschaft with the Grenadier Guards . On May 1, 1846, he became a lieutenant and on March 16, 1849, a captain . In April 1851 he left the British Army .

Marriage and children

FitzClarence married his cousin Wilhelmina Kennedy-Erskine (June 27, 1830– October 9, 1906) on April 17, 1855. Her mother, Augusta FitzClarence, was his father's sister, George Augustus FitzClarence. In her later years she became a writer. They had nine children:

  • Geoffrey George Gordon FitzClarence, 3rd Earl of Munster (July 18, 1859– February 2, 1902)
  • Hon. Arthur Falkland Manners FitzClarence (October 18, 1860– April 20, 1861)
  • Aubrey FitzClarence, 4th Earl of Munster (June 7, 1862– January 1, 1928)
  • Hon.William George FitzClarence (September 17, 1864 - October 8, 1899)
  • Hon. Harold Edward FitzClarence (November 15, 1870– August 28, 1926); Father of Geoffrey FitzClarence, 5th Earl of Munster
  • Lady Lillian Adelaide Katherine Mary FitzClarence (December 10, 1873– July 15, 1948), married Captain William Arthur Edward Boyd
  • Lady Dorothea Augusta FitzClarence (May 5, 1876– January 28, 1942), married Major Chandos Brydges Lee-Warner

death

Lord Munster died at the age of 77 at 23 Palmeira Square, Hove . At the time, his second cousin, Edward VII, was King of the United Kingdom. He was buried in Cuckfield , Sussex . His third but eldest surviving son, Geoffrey, inherited his title.
