George Szpiro

George Geza Szpiro (born February 18, 1950 in Vienna ) is an Israeli - Swiss applied mathematician and journalist who has emerged as the author of popular scientific mathematical essays and books.

Life

Szpiro was born in Vienna, moved to Zug in 1961 and attended the Cantonal School in Zurich until he graduated from high school . He studied mathematics and physics at ETH Zurich , business administration at Stanford University and received his doctorate in mathematical economics from Hebrew University in Jerusalem in 1984 . He then went to the Hebrew University, the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Zurich . He also worked as a management consultant at McKinsey in Zurich , Munich and London .

Since 1986, he was Israel - correspondent of the Neue Zürcher Zeitung in Jerusalem , in 2012 he became a correspondent for the NZZ to the US West Coast. Szpiro has been a science journalist for the NZZ since 1997. His regular monthly column ( Szpiros Little Times Tables ) on mathematics, which has been published since 2002 in the Sunday edition, was also published in two books. He also wrote a book each about the solution of the Kepler conjecture and the Poincaré conjecture .

As a scientist, he dealt with financial mathematics, risk theory, genetic algorithms and their use in predicting regularities in time series.

In 2003 he received the Media Prize of the Swiss Academy of Sciences and in 2006 he received the DMV Media Prize for his column.
