George Pierce Doles

George Pierce Doles (born May 14, 1830 in Milledgeville , Baldwin County , Georgia , † June 2, 1864 at Bethesda Church , Virginia ) was a businessman and brigadier general of the Confederate States of America during the Civil War .

Life

Doles was born in 1830 to Josiah Doles, a tailor, and his wife Martha (née Pierce). He attended school where he was born, became a hopeful businessman in Milledgeville and, as a young man, captain of the Baldwin Blues , the local militia .

When the Civil War broke out, Doles and most of the Baldwin Blues joined the Confederate Army . He was admitted as a captain, the 4th Georgia Infantry - regiment assigned and Norfolk stationed (Virginia). In May 1862 Doles was promoted to colonel of the regiment, which he led from now on as part of the Northern Virginia Army during the Peninsula Campaign (March to July 1862) . On July 1, 1862, at the Battle of Malvern Hill , he was wounded.

In September of that year he again led his regiment in the Maryland campaign as part of Ripley's Brigade in the division of Lieutenant General Daniel Harvey Hill . When Ripley was fatally wounded at the Battle of Antietam on September 17, 1862, Doles temporarily took command of his brigade, which earned him promotion to brigadier general in November 1862 . In the following years he successfully led his brigade a. a. to the Battle of Fredericksburg, Virginia, December 11-15, 1862; and the Battle of Chancellorsville, Virginia, May 1-4, 1862.

In 1863, during the Gettysburg campaign , Dole's brigade became part of Rode's division and on July 1, 1863, at the Battle of Gettysburg , Pennsylvania , he attacked the IX in northern Gettysburg. Corps of the Union Army and was able to throw it back. In 1864 he fought with his brigade in the Battle of the Wilderness from May 5th to 6th and in the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House from May 8th to 21st.

During the Battle of Cold Harbor from May 31 to June 12, 1864, Doles was inspecting the dug-out positions near Bethesda Church in early June when he was shot dead by a Union force sniper.
