George Walker Bush in "Being W." (Original title: Being W. - Dans la peau de George W. Bush ) is a French documentary by the journalist and satirist Karl Zéro and the director Michel Royer from 2008. It describes in a satirical way the career and term of office of the 43rd US President George W. Bush in five chapters, the names of which are based on the first letter "W" of Bush's middle name.
The film often makes use of the protagonist's embarrassing slip of the tongue , so-called "Bushisms" . Lutz Mackensy lent the German dubbing voice to the protagonist, who in the original is spoken by the voice imitator Jim Meskimen .
action
The preparations for a televised address from the Oval Office are shown.
W for Walker
Walker ("walk", English to go), the middle name of the president, is stylized as his central task. Bush walks from the side entrance to the lectern, from the gangway across the tarmac or across the lawn to the waiting reporters. He goes to do his tasks "step by step".
W for WASP
The electoral success of his father George Bush is attributed to the fact that George W. Bush appeared in the media as WASP ("White Anglo-Saxon Protestant"). For example, he said on television that Christ had changed his life. Through the influence that his family had because of the Zapata Oil founded by George Bush, the sons George W. Bush and Jeb Bush , who was elected governor of the state of Florida , also succeeded in placing their sons in US politics.
W for Winner
The election victories to governor of Texas in 1994 and 1998 are shown. It also lists the 2000 presidential election in the United States , which George W. Bush won with fewer votes than Al Gore , as well as various inconsistencies in the counting of votes.
W for Warrior
With the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon on September 11, 2001 , the time began when George W. Bush came into the limelight as commander of the US armed forces. As part of the fight against terror , the USA PATRIOT Act , Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan and the Iraq war as well as the imprisonment of terrorist suspects in Guantanamo Bay are discussed in particular .
W for why
The President's performance during his two terms in office is being questioned. During the final scenes, the film runs backwards and shows previously seen scenes again, only to end with a picture from Bush's youngest childhood.
background
The film celebrated its world premiere on May 18, 2008 at the Cannes International Film Festival . It was shown on arte on October 8, 2008 in the production country France . In Germany it was also shown on arte for the first time on October 26, 2008.
Reviews
The editors of Spiegel Online judged: "[This film] [...] skillfully brings out the seductive power of this man who, as a mixture of clown, cowboy and prayer brother, has always shrunk the world to a manageable format for the somewhat simpler minds."
Hans Czerny sums up for the cineastentreff: “In your - mind you -" unauthorized "presidential portrait you can meet again that gentleman who makes the Iraq war palatable against the backdrop of the White House - or in the case of the sharpest background explosions, peace this world cheered. "
