Georgenzell is a district of Rosa in the Schmalkalden-Meiningen district in Thuringia .

location

Georgenzell is located in the Vorderrhön , about 500 meters east of Rosa. The state road 1026 leads through the district coming from Wernshausen to Roßdorf leading through the village. The district was built funnel-shaped into the forest to the east. The Rosabach flows through Georgenzell .

history

The village was first mentioned in 1310 as "Witzigendorf". In the same year a small Cistercian monastery was founded by knight Berthold von Wildsprechtroda , who consecrated it to St. George in collaboration with Count Berthold VII von Henneberg. The monastery was subordinated to the abbot and convent of Georgenthal , who also settled it. It is possible that a monastery called Wolfszell once existed in the village as early as 996, which was probably founded by the Counts of Henneberg . The monastery did not exist long.

Since 1322 the village has been called "Georgenzell", as has the local monastery. In the neighboring village of Rosa there was already a small church at the beginning of the 14th century, over which the noble family von Wildsprechtroda exercised the patronage. The villages of Eckardts, Bernshausen, Zillbach, Helmers and Georgenzell belonged to the church “Rösleinverband”. In 1326 the right of patronage was transferred to the Georgenzell monastery.

The monastery was destroyed to the ground by fire during the Peasants' War in 1525. Farmers of the " Werrahaufens " who camped in front of Meiningen and moved down the Werra, dragged not only monasteries but also the already uninhabited fortress Frankenberg . After the secularization of the monastery, the parish Georgenzell was in 1531 by Wilhelm VI. von Henneberg-Schleusingen subordinated to the parish of Rosa, while before that Rosa belonged to Georgenzell. The monastery buildings fell into disrepair and were later demolished. The names of the fields like Klostergarten, Klosterwiese and Paradies as well as ditches and dams of former ponds still remind of the monastery.

Since 1680 the place in the Amt Sand belonged to the Duchy of Saxony-Meiningen and since 1920 to the Free State of Thuringia . As a result of the regional and administrative reform, the place Georgenzell was incorporated into Rosa on March 8, 1994. In 2012, around 300 people lived in the district.
