Georges Michel Bakar

Georges Michel Bakar (born April 20, 1946 in Cairo , Egypt ) is Archbishop of the Melkite Greek Catholic Church . He was Vicar Apostolic of Jerusalem for the Melkite Church and has been Patriarchal Vicar of Alexandria and Synkellos to the Patriarch of Antioch for the Melkite Church in Egypt and Sudan since 2008 . He is also Grand Prior of the Patriarchal Order of the Holy Cross in Jerusalem .

Church career

He studied at the seminary of St. Anne in Harissa (Lebanon) philosophy , moving on to the University of St. Esprit to Beirut and studied theology . He graduated from the Catholic University of Lyon ( France ) with a degree in theology . On July 6, 1973, he received by Archbishop Paul Antaki the ordination , from 1978 he worked as rector at Patriarchalkolleg in Cairo. From 2004 to 2006 he was head of budget and finance for the Archdiocese of Alexandria in Egypt and Sudan.

On February 9, 2006, he was named Titular Archbishop of Pelusium dei Greco-Melkiti and Vicar Apostolic of Jerusalem. On March 24, 2006, the episcopal ordination took place by the Patriarch of Antioch Archbishop Gregory III. Laham BS and the co-consecrators Archbishop Joseph Jules Zerey and Archbishop Paul Antaki. He took office on June 1, 2006, at the same time he was appointed Grand Prior of the Patriarchal Order of the Holy Cross in Jerusalem. On January 5, 2008, Bakar was appointed Patriarchal Vicar of Alexandria and Syncellus to the Patriarch of Antioch for the Melkite Church in Egypt and Sudan.

At the special assembly of the Synod of Bishops for the Middle East , Archbishop Bakar expressed the wish to convene a pan-Arab general congress. "Patriarchs, archbishops and bishops of all churches in the Middle East should come to this and advise on the formation of future Christian generations."
