Joseph Jules Zerey , also Yussuf Zerej (born June 9, 1941 in Alexandria , Egypt ) is Archbishop of the Melkite Greek Catholic Church and Vicar Apostolic of Jerusalem .
career
On May 5, 1967, Joseph Jule Zerey was ordained a priest and on June 22, 2001, he was appointed titular archbishop of Damiata dei Greco-Melkiti and auxiliary bishop in Antioch . He was ordained bishop on November 9, 2001 by the Patriarch of Antioch Archbishop Gregory III. Laham BS , the Archbishops Elias Zoghbi and Paul Antaki assisted as co-consecrators . Also on June 22, 2001, Zerey was called Patriarchal Vicar of Alexandria and Synkellos for the Melkite Church in Egypt and Sudan .
On June 4, 2008, Zerey was called to be Vicar Apostolic of Jerusalem. In 2006 he was co-consecrator of Georges Michel Bakar as titular archbishop of Pelusium dei Greco-Melkiti , whose successor he was to become in 2008 in the office of Vicar Apostolic of Jerusalem, while Bakar was appointed Patriarchal Vicar of Alexandria in 2008. Zerey is Grand Prior of the Patriarchal Order of the Holy Cross in Jerusalem .
Pastoral duties
In 2010 Archbishop Zerey was a participant in the Synod of Bishops for the Middle East in Rome . At the end of the protocol he raised the question in his objection why “many Christian families would emigrate from the Middle East ?” He stated that “many of our so-called“ Christian ”families urgently need to be re- evangelized ”. At the same time he announced the creation of an international center for family spirituality in Nazareth . Like all of his Melkite ministers, Zerey sees himself as a mediator between the Eastern Churches and the Roman Catholic Church . He promotes pastoral and social engagement in Jerusalem and supports the charity that has existed in the center of the old city of Jerusalem since 1950.
