Paul Antaki

Paul Antaki (born January 16, 1927 in Cairo ; † December 29, 2011 ) was auxiliary bishop of the Melkite Greek Catholic Church in Antioch and Patriarchal Exarch of Alexandria for Egypt and Sudan .

Life

After he had obtained the French and Egyptian university entrance qualifications , he studied theology at St. Anne's seminary in Jerusalem from 1945 to 1951 . This seminary is run by the White Fathers together with St. Anne's Church . He was ordained a priest on July 2, 1950. From 1951 to 1954 he was a parish priest in Alexandria . In 1954 he was called to the rain of the Patriarchal College in Cairo. From 1957 he was secretary to the Patriarchal Vicar Joseph Elias Tawil . In 1966 he was appointed head of the youth seminar in Rayak , Lebanon .

Episcopal dignity

On September 9, 1968, he was appointed titular archbishop of Nubia and auxiliary bishop in the Melkite Patriarchate of Antioch . He was ordained bishop on December 1, 1968 in Beirut Cathedral by the Patriarch of Antioch, Archbishop Maximos V. Hakim ; Co- consecrators were the Archbishops Elias Zoghbi von Baalbek and Patriarchal Vicar Joseph Elias Tawil . From 1968 to 2002 Antaki was also Patriarchal Vicar of Alexandria and then from 1991 to 2002 Patriarchal Exarch of Alexandria for Egypt and Sudan. In 1997 he was appointed Syncellus to the Patriarch of Antioch. He was a member of the Bishops' Conference of Egypt and chairman of the youth commission.

During his tenure as auxiliary bishop he ordained Georges Michel Bakar as a priest in 1973 and was co- consecrator at his episcopal ordination as titular archbishop of Pelusium dei Greco-Melkiti ( Apostolic Exarch of Jerusalem ). He was also co-consecrator to his successor as Patriarchal Vicar of Alexandria Joseph Jules Zerey to titular Archbishop of Damiata dei Greco-Melkiti (Auxiliary Bishop in Antioch).

On June 21, 2001, Pope John Paul II accepted his age-related resignation from the episcopate.
