The Eparchy of Alexandria ( Latin Archidioecesis Alexandrina Melchitarum ) is in Egypt located immediate Archdiocese of the Catholic Greek-Melkite Church , based in Alexandria . It includes the territory of Egypt, South Sudan and Sudan .

history

The establishment of the Melkite diocese dates back to 1772 and is based on the Apostolic Letter Orientalium dignitas of Pope Leo XIII. Since 1838 the diocese has been directly and directly assigned to the Melkite Patriarch of Antioch , the first administrator and titular patriarch was Patriarch Maximos III. Mazloum (1833-1855).

The diocese has been administered since 1838 by a patriarchal vicar with the rank of bishop . The first vicar was Qoyoumgi Thomas . From 1940 to 1970 the number of believers decreased from 35,000 to around 11,000. The Archdiocese has been headed by Georges Bakar since 2008.
